What do we do?
Although capable of offering an opinion with respect to any potential neurologic symptom or disorder, the Institute for Developmental Behavioral Neurology and the Arizona Dystonia Institute focus on individual groups of symptoms and disorders for which we are uniquely capable of assessing and treating.
What we Treat?
- Tourette Syndrome
- Down Syndrome
- Tics Disorders
- Reading and Math Disorders
- Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders
- Bipolar Disorder
Our goal is to offer premium care and service specific to each patient’s needs without having a third party payer dictate a patient’s diagnosis or treatment plan. We are not contracted with any insurance carriers and therefore, do not accept payment from insurance carriers. Rather, we have a direct relationship with each patient and their families to offer care that allows each patient to make an educated decision about treatments specific to their health.
We do offer, as a courtesy, to submit an insurance claim for reimbursement for the services rendered at the appointment. However, this is not a guarantee for payment or reimbursement for the services. Any time spent for writing letters of appeal, including clerical time spent on the phone and the time Dr. Duane spends writing the letter will be billed to the patient accordingly.
Blood work and Imaging
Any requests for blood work or outside imaging (X-Ray, CAT Scan, PET Scan, MRI)* will be done by an outside provider in which the patient is responsible for providing that provider with payment or with insurance information at the time of the appointment to have the services billed directly to the insurance carrier for the services rendered.
*Note, all other diagnostic testing and EEG’s are done in office.
Developmental Behavioral Neurology
Our comprehensive quantitative neurophysiological and neuropsychological studies, family history data and cognitive measures, provide an in-depth assessment pre and post treatment for developmental disorders that affect learning, alertness, memory and a variety of cognitive functions. In disorders such as Dyslexia, AD(H)D, Tourette Syndrome, Asperger and Autism, we have special experience and expertise. We have the largest database of Tourette Syndrome patients in Arizona and receive patients on recommendation by the Tourette Syndrome Association. Our assessment, when alertness or attention is an issue, involves rating scales and physiologic measures of alertness that sometimes includes pupillometry.
Movement Disorders and Cervical Dystonia
In the movement disorder domain, we have unique experience with all the forms of botulinum toxin and have been involved in the research of Myobloc, a form of botulinum toxin B, and the Dysport form of botulinum toxin A, but have been in collaboration with research involving Botox brand name botulinum toxin A. Cervical dystonia, Meige Syndrome, oromandibular dystonia, blepharospasm, writer’s cramp, musician’s dystonia, axial dystonia with scoliosis, and limb dystonia are in our level of expertise, with the largest experience in the world with cervical dystonia by our founding Arizona Dystonia Institute Director. These Institutes actively train pre-medical, medical, and resident students in Neurology and Psychiatry. Arizona Dystonia Institute was the first to employ botulinum toxin for dystonia in the state of Arizona. We have hosted colleagues from abroad to observe our multi-faceted in-depth assessment, which has proven over the years to minimize the risk of diagnostic error.
